YARN PROCESSING :
Yarns composed of staple fibres are manufactured by either cotton or
woolen system .
COTTON SYSTEM OF YARN PROCESSING
A) SALTING AND BLENDING : Cotton comes into processing unit in large
bales to make cotton yarns or the yarns that are blend of several fibres
with uniform quality are combined from several bales . The bales are
opened and thin layers of fibres from these bales are put into the blending
machine . The machine loosens and seprates the clsely packed fibres
and removes any dust(seeds, twigs etc) and blend the fibre into a uniform
mixture.
B) PICKING: After blending the fibres go to the picking machine .These
machine clean them further and form them into lap which is 45" wide.
It is called the Pickle Lap.
C) CARDING: The pickle lap is put into the carding machine . This step
continues the cleaning process, removing fibre which are too short .
The fibre are straighten into a thin uniform weft . The weft moves into
a funnel shaped device where it is gathered into a soft mass and forms
card silver which is about one inch in diameter.
D) COMBING: For highquality of yarn of outstanding eveness, smoothness,
fineness and strength the fibreare combed . Fibre are completely removed
as they come out of the combing machine in the the form of comb silver.
E) DRAWING : Drawing follows either carding or combining depending
on the quality of yarns. Many silvers are combined and put into drawing
machines where they are put together to be drawn out into a silver not
larger than the original single silver . If blends of two or more yarns
are done then silver will be of two different fibres . for eg: Blend
of cotton and polyester.
F) ROVING : The silver is taken to the roving machine where it is made
in until it measure one- fourth to one -eight of its original diameters.
G) SPINNING: The final process in the manufacture of yarns is the spinning
process. Here the yarn is stretch to its ultimatediameter and a desired
amount of twist is inserted.
