Mughal Empire in the region called now as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. During those days both men and women both used to wear Indian salwar kameez but over the years Indian Salwar Kameez has found its popularity more in women in India while the dress is still worn by both men and women in Islamic culture.
Indian Salwar Kameez popularity grew immensely due to its compatibility especially in summers which is very hot in this part of the region. Infact Indian Salwar Kameez in Pakistan is known as shalwar kameez while People of Pakistan also call it as “awam” Dress meaning Dress of the people. Then the last set of the Indian Salwar Kameez is the dupatta which is a free flowing fabric about 2 meters in length. The Dupatta is worn around the neck while wearing the Indian Salwar Kameez or worn over the head. A complete Indian salwar kameez of an average size can be made in 6.25 meters. The salwar is made in 2.25 meters, the kameez is made in 2 mtrs and the dupatta is made in 2 meters. The total of 6.25 meters can vary as per large sizes and also as per the designing of the Indian salwar kameez.
The salwar kameez is made in various fabrics like silk is normally worn in winter being a hotter fabric while cotton with embroidery on the salwar or other designs is worn in summers. Georgette and chiffon are ever green fabric and is used in lot of salwar kameez.
Indian Salwar Kameez has also earned more fame after Aishwarya Rai winning the Miss World title. Aishwarya Rai celebrity status and her wearing Indian salwar kameez in various international functions also did its bit in Indian traditional clothing having a name overseas. Even bollywood (Indian Cinema) has been an added motivator in promoting Indian Salwar Kameez worldwide. Bollywood has been a global source for people looking for new designs, trends and style.
